under the shrine of the Virgin of Vefa, site of a Christian place of worship for 1600 years. Nearly all the visitors today are Muslim women seeking the healing powers of the Christian Virgin Mary who wait patiently for a blessing by the Greek Orthodox priest, despite the fact that this is seriously frowned upon in Sunni Islam.

of Eğrikapı, or crooked-gate, is located just outside the ancient land walls of the city. With almost no Greeks left in the neighborhoods of the old city, the burial ground is fighting a losing battle for survival. 1994
